Today we are sitting down with Greg!
Greg is literally the machine behind the machine. He takes care of all our QC (quality control) checks from the ground up and collaborates closely with sound designers to ensure every sample pack is top-notch.
We go through a highly detailed and structured process to make this happen. First, each pack is reviewed for overall concept and musical value. Then, if approved by A&R, it goes straight into Greg’s hands. From there, he works with the artist to refine every detail.
Additionally, he checks for technical consistency:
– Proper naming conventions? ✅
– All on the grid? ✅
– No clicks, issues, errors, pops? ✅
– Correct bit/sample rate issues? ✅
– Artwork, demo and all else ready to go and in the pack? ✅
But Greg’s role doesn’t end there. He also helps with day-to-day operations and ensures the packs are ready for distribution and shop upload.
In short, his contribution is essential. Without Greg, we’d have a hard time delivering the level of quality that makes Black Octopus Sound stand out. Moreover, his ears are backed by years of experience as a mastering engineer, which gives him an incredible attention to sonic detail..
Q: How did you start working in the sample pack industry and with Black Octopus Sound?
I started as a sound design a little over a decade ago and then from there was hired on by Black Octopus a little less than 2 years ago.
Q. What is your favorite artist and favorite genre as a listener?
I love me some Drum and Bass, as far as artist goes Noisia, Simula, BurrOak
Q: What do you love most about working in the Sample Pack industry?
I love helping provide the sounds and tools for artist all around the world. For A-List artist to producers clear up to those just starting out! It inspires me to make others inspired like this.
Q: What is your favorite sample pack release from Black Octopus Sound?
Jump Up Allstars tho I might be biased because it’s my pack. Otherwise Screamarts Deep Sea Dubstep. That pack is massive and so well produced.
Q: What about your favorite production tool or technique – any secret weapons?
Midside EQ goes a long way. The idea of making songs sound 3D using mid side eqing is my favorite
Q: How do you see the future of music and sample pack creation? What about producers; whats the future of helping them stay inspired?
The future looks good. Music is constantly evolving and that’s great. I think for Sample Packs there is a nice future but mostly for those who really spend time on taking sound design to the next level. As a sound designer you have to care just as much about each individual sound you create just like a producer does for each one of their tracks. Those will be the sample pack creators who move forward! For producers there is so much cool software coming out like Serum 2, along with mixing plugins where you just can’t help but want to create!
Q: If you could be any animal what would it be and why?
Probably a Jaguar in the Amazon. A solid predator with no predators looking for it. Plus the jungle is real cool and peaceful haha.
