Black Octopus Sound

Futuretone Artist Interview – June DnB Month

As part of Black Octopus Sound’s month-long celebration of Drum and Bass, we’re diving deep into the creative minds pushing the genre forward. First up is Futuretone (aka WubbaDuck) an unstoppable force known for crafting razor-sharp basslines, intricate rhythms, and high-octane tracks. With packs that blend gritty underground textures and polished production finesse, Futuretone has carved out a signature sound that’s turning heads across the scene. We sat down with him to talk about influences, production tricks, and what keeps his DnB engine firing at full throttle.

Q: What are your main roles in the music business and the wider music industry? (e.g. artist, educator, sound designer, label owner, etc.)

I make music as Wubbaduck, and also have a Sample Pack label called Futuretone.

Q: How long have you been involved in the music industry, and how has it evolved since you started?

I started producing music in 2011, for the first 4 years I didn’t really have any successes, from 2015 a huge dubstep youtube channel (DubstepGutter) started promoting my music, from then I got followings, huge gigs alongside artists like Doctor P, Cookie Monsta, Ivory etc. I started creating sample packs in 2019, since then I’m doing it passionately.

Q: Tell us a bit about your journey into music production. How did you first get into producing Drum & Bass?

I loved going to Dubstep and Drum n Bass parties when i just started going out with my friends in the night. One day a youtube video got in front of my which was a tutorial video on how to make a Rusko bass. I watched it and got hooked in instantly. Downloaded Reason 4 and started watching tutorials on how to make music the next day.

I always loved DnB but never got so good in it to try to make a full track in this genre. Then in around 2021 my friend asked me to make him a drum n bass track for his Youtube channel. I loved the process of creating the track so music that I kept practicing the genre more and more and made unofficial remixes in popular older songs, like ’Blue’, ’Disturbia’ etc.

Q: Are there any iconic DnB tracks you wish you made, either for the groove or the sound design?

Oh yes, one of the Pendulum tracks which lured me in even deeper in the love of DnB was ’Vulture’. I wish I made it back then haha.

Q: What are some of your favorite things about being part of a music scene, especially within DnB?

It is a special, really supportive community, even in the DJ and the Producer field. Most of the artist try and help each other develope, everyone sees that it’s beneficial for both parties to keep in touch and rise high together.

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve run into being in the music industry — and how have you handled them?

It was hard to change from a certain kind of genre in dubstep to other kind of subgenres because I was too deep in it even if it wasn’t that popular after a while. It took me a lot of tries to develop further and create in more genres other than dubstep.

Q: What are some common mistakes you hear in DnB production that your pack helps solve?

I can hear boring, overused sounds in a lot of even top label released music, my samples can help solve this problem, as you can find sounds in these packs you never heard before.

Q: What gear, plugins, or DAWs do you rely on most when designing for sample packs?

I use FL Studio 21 to produce music and sample packs. My number one VST to create, is xfer Serum1 / Serum2. I make 99% of my sounds in this plugin.

Q: How do you keep things fresh when designing multiple sounds in a tight genre like Drum & Bass?

I try the be up-to-date in every genres I produce, listening to the latest releases from unknown artists to the top artists in the specific genre.

Q: Do you have a favorite sample or section in your pack that producers should check out?

I recommend checking the bass loop section and the serum preset section, I use these ones daily while creating my own music.

Q: Do you have any advice for emerging producers trying to make a name in Drum & Bass or sample pack design?

Watch tutorials on how to make tracks from scratch, dive deep in sound design, analyse presets, play with them, modify samples, learn the hidden tips and tricks of the producers who share them. If you want to make it in the sample pack industry you have to be master of the genre, have to be unique in sound design. It’s also necesary to be good in marketing nowadays, be there on every social platforms, it’s inevitable.

Q: What upcoming projects (music, packs, collabs, shows) are you most excited about?

I have around 8-10 new sample packs coming together in several genres like uk dubstep, trap, drum and bass, midtempo, etc, I’m really looking forward on the feedback on those ones.
